Paikea’s Daggerboards: A Field Guide to Placement
Ask most people what makes a performance catamaran different from a production cruiser, and they’ll talk about hull shape, or weight, or sail area. The real answer, more often than not, is daggerboards — and specifically, knowing where to put them. A fixed keel doesn’t ask anything of you. A daggerboard does, constantly, and getting it right is one of the genuine skills of sailing a boat like Paikea well.
This is one of those areas where there’s no single correct answer — board position changes with point of sail, wind strength, sea state, and what you’re actually trying to achieve in that moment, whether that’s outright speed, steering control, or just comfortable, controlled progress in difficult conditions. What follows is a practical breakdown of how we actually set our boards, condition by condition, built from real moments underway rather than theory.
Daggerboards were also the very first project we tackled on Paikea — extending the originals early in the refit, before almost anything else got touched. Shayne’s got plans to extend them further again down the track, so this is very much a living topic rather than a finished one — expect more here as that next project happens.
At Anchor

The simplest case, and worth stating plainly since it trips people up: at anchor, in normal light-wind conditions, the boards come all the way up. There’s no lift or steering benefit being generated at anchor, so there’s nothing to gain by having them down, and every reason to keep them retracted and out of the way.
The exception is specific and situational — if it’s gusty and the boat’s swinging around more than you’d like, or there’s a meaningful current or tidal influence at play and you’d rather the boat sit into the current than get pushed around by the wind, dropping a board partway can help settle that. But that’s a deliberate response to a specific problem, not the default. Default at anchor is boards up.
Upwind, Light Airs

In light breeze upwind — somewhere around 10-12 knots — the boards go all the way down. This is the condition where you need every bit of lateral resistance the board can give you to stop the boat sliding sideways rather than tracking forward efficiently upwind. The only real reason to bring a board up in this scenario is if the water’s shallow enough that it’s a practical necessity rather than a performance choice.
Upwind, Light Airs and a Sloppy Sea State

Add a lumpy, confused sea state into that same light-air upwind scenario and the case for full board deployment gets even stronger, not weaker. In genuinely lumpy conditions, the bow of the boat lifts clear of the water on each wave, and every time it does, you lose a meaningful amount of grip from the front of the boat. That’s exactly the moment you need to be pulling as much lateral resistance as possible out of the boards to compensate — particularly when you’re also sailing underpowered for the conditions (reefed down for breeze that hasn’t quite arrived yet), since a boat that’s already under-canvassed needs all the help it can get holding a line upwind.
Upwind, 20 Knots, Flat Water

This is the condition where you can actually afford to bring the boards up a little, and it’s worth understanding why. In flat water with real breeze — attention on the true wind reading rather than just what you’re feeling gust to gust — you’re generating strong grip from the board even without full depth, simply because there’s enough boat speed and breeze to load it properly. Pair that with flat water, where you’re not fighting the bow lifting clear on every wave the way you are in a sloppy sea, and there’s genuinely less need for maximum board area. Trim here comes down to feel — enough board down to hold your line without excess drag, not full depth simply out of habit.
Downwind, Light Airs

Running dead downwind in light air, wing-on-wing, is close to the opposite case from beating upwind in the same breeze. You don’t need much board at all here — just enough sticking out the bottom to give the boat something to turn around, essentially a minimum viable amount of grip for steerage rather than lift.
The way to find that amount is by feel, not by formula: start with the board up, and ease it down gradually until the boat stops wandering and starts tracking straight. Too little board and the boat swings around under you constantly; the right amount settles it down without adding drag you don’t need running downwind.
Broad Reach, Moderate Wind

A broad reach in decent breeze and gentle waves is where board asymmetry really pays off — and it’s worth setting up deliberately rather than leaving both boards the same. In this mode, the leeward board goes down for grip and something to turn around, while the windward board comes up to cut drag and reduce the chance of it catching or interfering while surfing down waves. This is very much a performance-first setup rather than a conservative one — appropriate when you’re genuinely chasing boat speed rather than prioritizing safety margin.
Downwind, Heavy Air, Confused Seas

There’s one more scenario worth covering, even sailing close to dead downwind: strong breeze with genuinely confused wave patterns working against the boat, not with it. Even running close to square, a partially deployed windward board earns its place here — not for lift, but purely for steering control. It gives the rudders something to pivot against when a wave slews the stern around, which without a board down can pick up a hull and push the boat sideways in a way the rudders alone can’t correct in time. It’s a small amount of board for a specific job: keeping the boat tracking straight when confused seas are actively working to turn it.

The Common Thread
Look across all of these scenarios and the underlying logic is consistent, even though the specific setup changes completely from one condition to the next: daggerboard position is always answering one of two questions — how much lateral grip do I need right now, and how much drag can I afford to trade for it? Upwind and in confused seas, the answer leans hard toward grip. Downwind and in flat, powered-up conditions, the answer leans toward cutting drag wherever it’s safe to do so. Everything above is really just that same trade-off, worked out condition by condition.
