We put the GoPro in the water while going upwind at speed, then told Olly on the helm to bear away in a hurry. The end result is some extremely interesting footage of laminar flow over our rudder and sail drive.
Using the newly discovered knowledge from this footage and the design tools we use in our professional work, we have designed our next generation of performance rudders for Paikea.
As you already know, we love to collect as much data as we can while sailing. We have over 5 years of cruising experience on Paikea and have done thousands of nautical miles to record and collect information. The most exciting has been the data collected while sailing with the various different shaped rudders.
