Choosing the right Anchor

Choosing the correct anchor for your boat is critical. If you have ever had an anchor that won’t hold you know what we are talking about. The stress and lack of sleep can really ruin a good cruising experience.

A good quality anchor that sets the first time can make all the difference to your experience onboard. If you are able to make a trip to shore or sleep at night is necessary for your peace of mind and stress levels.

We did a lot of research when we made the new carbon fibre cross beam on Paikea. We ended up choosing a Spade anchor and we love it. It has meant that we are able to anchor with confidence and without the fear of dragging in the middle of the night.

This playlist is a collection of videos we used to choose the correct anchor for Paikea. We like how this guy has shared his work for the benefit of others.

SV Panope is a fantastic site. I will now not own a boat unless it has an Excel anchor on it.. well I’ll make an exception for a Spade. I love the Excel, it has saved me in 60 knots swinging 90 degrees in the Bay of Islands and held in all sorts of different conditions.

    1. Agreed! He does fantastic work so that the rest of us can be informed when it comes to what anchor suits us best. We need more guys like him sharing their knowledge! PS we have a spade anchor and its awesome
