Resin Check Series
In this series of videos, we look at how to check your epoxy resin before beginning your job. As you can imagine, if you are about to start a critical lamination the last thing you need is for your resin to not perform to expectations.
In our case, we had some old resin that was nearing the expiry date. We needed to check the mechanical properties were still intact and had not “drifted” too much from the manufacturers’ specifications.
This first step involves making what we call a “token”
Once you have made your token, it is time to check the resin properties. It is important to do this in order to confirm that your batch of resin is still in a usable condition before you start your important project.
The next step is to check your HDT.
The HDT refers to the Heat Deformity Temperature. It is critical that you know at what temperature the resin is going to begin to soften and no longer work in the way you need it to. The manufacturer will give this information with the resin but it is important that you check for yourself before starting any major jobs or if you are unsure about a batch of resin. In our case, the resin was old and we wanted to check the properties were still close to manufacturer’s specs.
S-glass versus E-glass
Sometimes the outtakes from our YouTube videos are too good not to share. This discussion is about E-glass versus S-glass.
